How Are Woven Cotton Rugs Made?

The bolls are spun into yarns or threads, and as it is able to breath, this textile is one of the most commonly used natural fibre cloths used today. Many are constructed by using a hand loomed flat weave, others are machine made, and this can often be the reason for the difference in price. Most are aware that weaving is a craft where the long warp and side to side weft threads are threaded together by a loom or by machine. There are many different weaving patterns, the main three being plain, satin or twill. These can create plain or patterned designs, the more intricate being a tapestry weave. Your beautiful tie dyed mat, where dye is applied to the threads before being processed is known as ikat.  Today the main work is done on looms that are controlled by computers, mainly Jacquard but dobby looms are also used. There is still some traditional hand weaving about, and many will want to purchase something that has been created by hand, particularly when travelling abroad.

What about Turkish Woven Cotton Rugs?

One of the best known art forms for this type of product comes from Turkey. And there are economic and sociological reasons as to why this art is so accepted both in Turkey and in other countries. There is also a religious element to this popular art and that is due to the removal of shoes before entering the house. There is nothing better than the feeling of something soft and clean underfoot when coming barefoot into a hallway or reception room. These are very often sought after as handmade carpets are still considered far superior to industrial carpeting due to the skills of the artisans which has, in many cases, been handed down for centuries.
